From the book by Gordon R. Dickson, commissioned and published by Tor Books 1987.
Set in a similar world as with "Home From The Shore" (in this gallery), there are two races of men on earth, the "Sea Born" and the "Land Born".
When an alien race called the "Space Swimmers" beckons man to go out into space, treachery and deceit between men emerge, to create a schism between the Land and Sea Born. Contact is lost with the Space Swimmers.
It's left to the Sea Born to be able to reestabish the link, and reach out into the galaxy...
On a technical note, this art has every color found in the Munsell Color Wheel. It was a technique I was trying out at the time, to get every color in a single painting. It only worked a few times in my career, and nowadays, stick closer to Red/BlueGreen, Orange/Blue, Purple/YellowGreen, and Yellow/Violet systems by themselves.
